RICARDO STEYER

SYDNEY BASED BRAZILIAN GUITARIST & singer

Brazilian artist, 7-string guitarist & singer specialised in Choro, Samba & MPB (Música Popular Brasileira).

I was born in Porto Alegre and have been involved with music since very young age. At the beginning of my career, as a self-taught musician, I crossed the majority of musical genres and started playing music professionally in the early 2000’s in my home town, focusing on Rock and Pop-Rock repertoires.

Based in Sydney, Australia since 2012, my work shifted to developing and sharing the music from my country abroad, creating and joining Choro & Samba groups that range from trios to 9-piece funky ensembles performing in the most prestigious venues in the country.

More recently, I studied at the Brazilian School of Choro Raphael Rabello and have been exploring in depth the 7-string guitar with one of the greatest guitarists in this niche, Fernando César (Hamilton de Holanda’s brother), and this has been the main instrument in my music since 2015.

Below you’ll find some of my main projects.

TRIO TELEBOTECO

Trio Teleboteco plays Choro, from traditional to contemporary, in an intimate format. The group is made by Ricardo Steyer on 7-string guitar, Roberto Steyer on Brazilan mandolin and Renato Feijó on pandeiro.

With this project we have been performing at big venues like Lazybones & Foundry 616, often collaborating with other musicians, showcasing the beauty of this musical genre and offering the audience a bit of its historical background.

We also host regular “rodas de choro“, that are basically jam-like gigs around a table like it’s done in Brazil and all over the world. These rodas de choro happen mostly at Kitanda, a very authentic Brazilian style bar & restaurant in Darlinghurst.

Available for corporate & private events.

STEYER BROTHERS

My brother and I have been playing music together for more than 20 years and our latest adventure is a journey to our roots: exploring the Brazilian guitar repertoire and the works of Dilermando Reis, João Pernambuco, Turibio Santos, Baden Powell, Yamandu Costa, Toquinho, etc.

The Brazilian guitar has a lot to offer and plays a pivotal role in the culture of our country, so for us it is a real pleasure to step into our homeland's musical heritage and share it across Australia.

Available for corporate & private events.

BELIZA

Beliza is a 9-piece Brazilian MPB & funky-rock-samba band, that has been doing a fantastic job at selling out tickets in venues like Camelot Lounge & Lazybones.

In a Beliza show you’ll see a lot of energy and a great opportunity to enjoy yourself to the fullest as it delivers the combination of an extremely experienced ensemble with a community-based crowd that always plays a big part in making the party happening.

This project has music from Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, João Bosco, Djavan, Luiz Melodia, just to name a few, and I share the vocals with my brother, Roberto.

The group has been around for three years now and is versatile, also doing smaller gigs in trios to sextet formats, depending on the venue and occasion.

Available for corporate & private events.

OTHER PROJECTS

Over the years I have been in Australia I have led and participated in an infinity of other projects and collaborated with amazing musicians. A few to mention are:

Gaia: a 7-piece Brazilian 70’s funk & samba project, with Stuart Vandegraaff, Deva Permana, Stan Valacos, Tim Hans, Dan Laurence & Mathias Wulff playing music from João Nogueira, Wilson das Neves, João Bosco, Gal Costa, Ivan Lins, etc.

Performing Brazil: a traditional choro & samba group led by Edgee Ribeiro that has been around since the 90’s, exploring “samba de raiz“ (roots samba) and the great masters such as Beth Carvalho, Chico Buarque, Paulinho da Viola, Vinícius de Moraes, etc.

Brasileira: more recently I have been collaborating with Nadya Golski, Leonid Beshlei, Jose Antonio Marques Muzzio & Roberto Steyer on a bossa nova project, exalting the works of Antônio Carlos Jobim.

Bateria 61: a 20-30 piece community percussion samba band focused on batucada, samba reggae & all Brazilian rhythms. I have played several big music festivals with this group such as Psyfari, Return to Rio, Ritmo Brazilian Day, City-2-Surf & various Latin festivals performing both drumming parades & samba-enredos (Brazilian carnival songs).

I have had residencies in some of the greatest live music venues in Sydney such as Mr. Falcon’s, The Temperance Society, Playbar, Lazybones and Django Bar @ Camelot Lounge, but have also performed in other cities like Newcastle, Wollongong, Hunter Valley, Melbourne, Adelaide, etc. I am always open & keen to get involved in new projects collaborating with other musicians & new cultures.

MUSIC CLASSES

My purpose as music tutor is to explore the creativity within the student, to develop personal confidence and the set of skills necessary to master a musical instrument, and to engage the studies with excitement, fun and an achievement plan. Each student gets a tailored program based on their experience and goals, going through exercising, general understanding of theory & how to apply that into practice and development of repertoire.

I currently teach guitar, bass, ukulele and drums at The Music Space in Ramsgate and St Ives, but also have individual private students of guitar, 7-string guitar and a few other instruments.

If you would like to learn or develop your musical skills with an instrument, explore music theory, harmony, or even get started in your musical journey, please send a message in the Contact form below. All ages are welcome.
